Distant Shift VU5.1 introduces Discoveries, a brand-new collectible expedition system built around uncovering unusual objects while actively exploring the game's core professions. Eggs, relics, components, ancient artifacts, shards and other strange objects can now be recovered and permanently recorded as part of your expedition history.
The new Expedition Archive sits directly below Achievements and displays your recovered collection using an open-ended X / ? counter. Only objects you have actually discovered are ever shown. There are no silhouettes, locked cards, hidden names or visible collection totals, so the archive never tells you exactly what is still waiting to be found.
Every recovered Discovery receives its own archive card using dedicated icon artwork. Opening a card reveals a full Discovery Record containing larger artwork, category information, descriptive details, lore and recovery information including where and when the object was found.
Discoveries are now tied specifically to active manual gameplay. Successful manual Gathering, Combat, Prospecting and Fabrication actions can secretly trigger a Discovery check. Passive production, idle progression and other automatic systems cannot silently recover collectible Discoveries while you are away.
The manual Discovery chance has also been rebalanced following initial testing. The first implementation was too restrictive and could produce extremely long periods without a find, so VU5.1 now keeps Discoveries uncommon while making them realistically obtainable through active play.
When a Discovery is recovered, a dedicated DISCOVERY FOUND popup now appears immediately instead of the object silently entering the archive. A new Discovery audio chime also plays through Distant Shift's existing sound-effects system so finding something unusual has clear visual and audio feedback.
Each newly recovered object provides three reward choices. These rewards are dynamically weighted around your current progression instead of using fixed values that quickly become irrelevant. Reward generation can consider factors such as production, sector progression, Ascensions, unlocked professions, current shortages, useful upcoming Upgrade costs and Fabrication requirements, helping Discovery rewards remain meaningful throughout the game.
Closing a Discovery popup without selecting a reward does not lose anything. The recovered object remains permanently archived and any unclaimed reward choice is preserved in the save until it is claimed.
The Discoveries system has been built separately from the existing Discovery Upgrades system. Existing saves remain compatible, collectible Discoveries survive Ascension, and players loading saves created before VU5.1 simply begin with an empty collectible archive without affecting their existing progression.
VU5.1 also establishes a dedicated artwork structure using lightweight archive icons and larger full-size Discovery artwork. The collection is intentionally open-ended, allowing future Distant Shift updates to continue introducing new objects without ever revealing a final total.
Discoveries are designed to add another layer of mystery to ordinary Distant Shift play. You may know what profession you are working on and what sector you are pushing toward, but you will not know what strange piece of the expedition's history might turn up next.
