VERSION UPDATES

Follow the evolution of Distant Shift.

Version Update notes, feature changes, balance work and major milestones from the private development build through the current public Distant Shift experience.

DEVELOPMENT RECORD

Private development predates the public domain.

The Version Update dates below are retrospective internal development milestones. 1 September 2026 is the earliest point from which changes were formally recorded for this public history, but the game had already been in private development before then while the core systems were being built.

distantshift.com was registered after the game was already substantially developed. The public domain therefore marks the creation of the standalone Distant Shift website, not the beginning of development.

VERSION HISTORY

Recorded Version Updates.

Each Version Update groups the real development changes in chronological order while using the project's retrospective internal VU numbering and dates.

VU4.4

System Terminal & Assignment Rework

VU4.4 adds the new reactive System Terminal, improves sidebar presentation, fixes Fabrication feedback while God Booster is active and significantly reworks Expedition Assignments for better pacing and late-game rewards.

System Terminal
  • Added the new System Terminal to the left sidebar beneath the profession progression section.
  • Added a global gameplay event system so the terminal can react to player actions throughout Distant Shift.
  • The terminal now reacts contextually to actions including manual profession activity, upgrade purchases, profession changes, creature defeats, discoveries, sector progression, world progression, achievements, Boosters, minigames, Shop activity and Ascension.
  • Added procedural terminal dialogue generation so responses are assembled dynamically rather than relying on a large fixed list of complete messages.
  • Terminal responses can use contextual information such as profession, manual or automatic progression, upgrade names, upgrade levels and player behaviour.
  • Added behavioural reactions for repeated or rapid activity including rapid manual input, repeated upgrades, profession switching and other player patterns.
  • Added message-history protection to reduce repeated terminal responses and keep commentary varied during longer sessions.
  • Added event cooldowns and response filtering so the terminal reacts without overwhelming normal gameplay.
  • Expanded the terminal display to show four message rows at once.
  • Added scrollable terminal history so previous messages can be reviewed.
  • The terminal automatically follows new messages while retaining earlier terminal output for manual scrolling.
  • Kept the terminal non-intrusive with no popup interruptions and no dependency on the existing notification system.
Sidebar & Profession Interface
  • Compacted the profession section in the left sidebar to create more room for gameplay information.
  • Inactive professions now collapse into smaller rows while the currently selected profession remains expanded.
  • Switching profession screens automatically updates which profession entry is expanded.
  • Positioned the System Terminal directly below profession progression and above Achievements, Loot History and Ascension.
  • Moved the God Booster control into the existing Shop, Minigame and Sector control row.
  • God Booster availability no longer creates an additional sidebar row or causes unnecessary vertical layout movement.
God Booster & Fabrication
  • Fixed the Fabrication idle display not visibly responding when God Booster was activated.
  • Separated the displayed God Booster Fabrication value from the underlying fabrication cycle rate so the interface can show the 10x effect without increasing fabrication cycle speed.
  • Fixed an intermediate display calculation that incorrectly multiplied Fabrication capacity by component yield and caused the displayed idle value to become inflated even without God Booster active.
  • Confirmed God Booster continues to provide exactly 10x eligible productive output across Gathering, Combat, Prospecting and Fabrication.
  • Confirmed God Booster applies to eligible manual output across all four professions.
  • Preserved Fabrication output boosting without multiplying resource consumption or accidentally applying the God Booster twice.
Expedition Assignments
  • Reworked endless Expedition Assignment pacing so distant sector milestones are no longer shown immediately after completing the previous milestone.
  • Sector milestone assignments now enter the assignment queue only when the player is approximately one or two sectors away from the target.
  • Added procedurally generated assignments between major sector milestones so progression continues to provide shorter objectives while working toward the next major sector target.
  • Added generated assignment types covering creature defeats, Field Essence gathering, Ore extraction, Component fabrication, manual actions, upgrade purchases and Credit earnings.
  • Generated assignment targets now scale from current player progression rather than using outdated early-game quantities.
  • Endless assignment state is now retained so generated objectives remain stable instead of unexpectedly changing during normal gameplay.
  • Improved migration behaviour so existing completed sector milestones continue to be respected when loading older saves.
  • Significantly increased higher-sector assignment rewards.
  • Assignment rewards now scale using both sector progression and the current expedition economy so late-game rewards remain meaningful when players are operating with millions or billions of Credits.
  • Major sector milestone assignments provide stronger rewards than the shorter generated assignments between them.

VU4.3

Credit Progression & Fabrication Power

Expanded Credit and manual Fabrication progression with eighteen new upgrades, improved early-game Fabrication growth and a new Upgrade Type filter for easier navigation.

New Upgrades
  • Added 18 new upgrades across Credit production and manual Fabrication progression.
  • Added 5 new manual Credit upgrades.
  • Added 5 new idle/passive Credit upgrades.
  • Added 8 new manual Fabrication upgrades.
  • New Credit upgrades are staggered throughout progression with increasingly demanding sector, resource and Ascension requirements.
  • Manual and passive Credit upgrades now provide more distinct progression paths for active and idle play.
Fabrication Progression
  • Expanded manual Fabrication progression with additional upgrades across early, mid and late progression.
  • Added new early-sector manual Fabrication upgrades beginning from Sector 2.
  • Manual Fabrication upgrades now unlock more consistently instead of leaving large gaps between progression stages.
  • Later manual Fabrication upgrades introduce stronger bonuses and additional resource and Ascension requirements.
Upgrade Filtering
  • Added a new Upgrade Type filter alongside the existing Cost Type filter.
  • Upgrade Type can now be filtered by Gathering, Combat, Prospecting or Fabrication.
  • Cost Type and Upgrade Type filters can be combined to narrow the upgrade list more precisely.
  • Updated the new filter row so selected buttons use the same active styling as the existing Cost Type filter.

VU4.2

Compact Interface & Upgrade Clarity

A focused interface and reliability update makes Distant Shift more compact across desktop, tablet and mobile, improves Upgrade navigation and cost readability, reduces unnecessary scrolling and strengthens mobile audio and responsive behaviour.

Upgrade Interface
  • Reduced padding, margins and spacing throughout Upgrade cards to display more progression information on screen with less scrolling.
  • Added colour-coded Upgrade purchase buttons so Credits, Field Essence, Ore and Components can be identified more quickly by their resource cost.
  • Added a Cost Type filter allowing Upgrades to be filtered by All, Credits, Field Essence, Ore or Components.
  • Improved the overall density of the Upgrade interface while preserving upgrade descriptions, costs, levels and existing functionality.
  • Changed the narrow-screen Upgrade layout to a single-column presentation for improved readability on smaller displays.
  • Improved Upgrade scrolling behaviour on narrow layouts so mouse-wheel and page scrolling operate naturally instead of being trapped inside the Upgrade panel.
Compact Game Interface
  • Reduced excess padding, margins and gaps throughout the main game interface.
  • Compacted the top interface, resource presentation, primary layout spacing and major gameplay sections.
  • Reduced unnecessary vertical space across desktop, tablet and mobile layouts to keep more useful gameplay information visible at once.
  • Reduced the height of the main creature and combat stage so the active gameplay area takes up less vertical screen space.
  • Adjusted responsive sizing for the creature stage across desktop, tablet and mobile displays while preserving combat interaction and creature presentation.
Mobile Audio Reliability
  • Improved Chrome mobile audio activation so the first normal tap or click can enable world music without requiring players to open Settings first.
  • AudioContext activation is now resumed directly from the initial user interaction before world audio playback begins.
  • World music, sound effects and existing audio settings continue to use the established Distant Shift audio system.
Responsive Interface Fixes
  • Improved narrow-window and mobile-width behaviour when the desktop browser is resized.
  • Preserved full-page scrolling for Upgrade content on smaller layouts instead of forcing an unnecessary internal scroll area.
  • Improved interface consistency across desktop, tablet and mobile without changing gameplay progression, save data or balance.

VU4.1

Manual Power & Puzzle State Reliability

Expanded early active-play progression with six new manual-only upgrades for Gathering, Combat and Prospecting, while also correcting persistent Puzzle Array state and loading behaviour that could prevent a previously completed puzzle type from returning through reshuffles.

Manual Gathering Upgrades
  • Added Extractor Overdrive as a new early manual Gathering upgrade.
  • Added Field Compression Grip as a stronger later manual Gathering upgrade.
  • The new Gathering upgrades use a dedicated manual-only multiplier and increase both manual Credit and Field Essence output.
  • Automatic and idle Gathering production remain unaffected.
  • The new Gathering upgrades unlock during early sector progression between Sector 2 and Sector 4.
Manual Combat Upgrades
  • Added Pulse Overdrive as a new early manual Combat upgrade.
  • Added Capacitor Trigger Link as a stronger later manual Combat upgrade.
  • The new Combat upgrades use a dedicated manual-only multiplier applied to manual attack damage.
  • Automatic Combat DPS remains unaffected.
  • The new Combat upgrades unlock during early sector progression between Sector 2 and Sector 5.
Manual Prospecting Upgrades
  • Added Probe Overdrive as a new early manual Prospecting upgrade.
  • Added Deep Signal Amplifier as a stronger later manual Prospecting upgrade.
  • The new Prospecting upgrades use a dedicated manual-only multiplier applied to manual Ore actions.
  • Automatic and idle Prospecting production remain unaffected.
  • The new Prospecting upgrades unlock during early sector progression between Sector 3 and Sector 5.
Manual Progression Balance
  • Added six new upgrades in total across Gathering, Combat and Prospecting.
  • The new upgrades provide an additional multiplier layer specifically for active manual play rather than increasing passive production.
  • Manual Fabrication was left unchanged because its dedicated five-upgrade progression introduced in VU3.2 already provides its intended active-play scaling.
  • The new manual multipliers stack with the existing profession, equipment and expedition progression systems.
Puzzle Array State Fixes
  • Fixed a persistent Puzzle Array state issue where the previously completed puzzle type could remain excluded from reshuffle selection.
  • The issue could cause Cargo Block Fit to disappear from repeated reshuffles when it was stored as the previous completed puzzle type.
  • The last completed puzzle type now remains fully eligible for future Puzzle Array selections and reshuffles.
  • Reshuffling now excludes only the puzzle currently displayed on screen, ensuring the replacement challenge is different while keeping all other puzzle types available.
  • Updated the mini-game state version and added automatic migration of older stored Puzzle Array state.
  • Stale active puzzle data is automatically replaced during migration without requiring players to manually clear browser storage.
  • Puzzle cooldown and reward progression remain integrated with the main Distant Shift save system.
Puzzle State & Browser Loading
  • Updated the main game save bridge to act as the authoritative source for Puzzle Array state whenever the bridge is available.
  • Prevented obsolete standalone mini-game localStorage data from being restored over newer main-game Puzzle Array state.
  • Updated the Puzzle Array loader to explicitly refresh the existing minigame.js file before execution so newly deployed mini-game changes are not replaced by a stale browser-cached copy.
  • The loading fix continues to use the existing minigame.js path and does not rely on query-string cache-busting filenames.
  • Players no longer need to clear browser cache, cookies or localStorage when receiving compatible Puzzle Array code updates.

VU4.0

Expedition Puzzle Array

Introduced the Expedition Puzzle Array, a complete mini-game system featuring five randomized puzzle types, reward selection, puzzle reshuffling, dedicated audio feedback and a two-hour recharge cycle. The system unlocks at Sector 40 and is designed to add a new layer of interactive progression alongside the main expedition.

Expedition Puzzle Array
  • Added the new Puzzle Mini-Games system as a permanent feature of Distant Shift.
  • The Puzzle Array unlocks at Sector 40.
  • The Mini Game button remains visible before Sector 40 so players can see the upcoming feature and its unlock requirement.
  • Once unlocked, the Mini Game button opens the dedicated Expedition Puzzle Array interface.
  • A fresh randomized puzzle is generated whenever the Puzzle Array is ready.
  • Completing a puzzle starts a real two-hour recharge period before another rewarded puzzle becomes available.
  • The Mini Game button displays the remaining recharge time while the Puzzle Array is unavailable.
  • Opening the Puzzle Array during the recharge period displays a disabled puzzle grid together with a live countdown until the next puzzle becomes available.
  • When the recharge reaches zero, the Puzzle Array becomes available again for a new randomized challenge.
Five Puzzle Types
  • Added Cargo Block Fit, a spatial puzzle built around fitting tetromino-style pieces into a grid.
  • Cargo Block Fit supports both 4x4 and significantly more challenging 6x6 puzzle layouts.
  • Tetromino pieces can be dragged directly from the piece tray onto the board.
  • Placed Cargo Block Fit pieces can be picked back up, repositioned and moved between valid grid locations.
  • Pieces remain visually attached to the pointer while being moved, making placement and repositioning feel responsive and predictable.
  • Added Sliding Puzzle challenges requiring tiles to be moved into their correct arrangement.
  • Added Jigsaw Puzzle challenges based around reconstructing randomized puzzle layouts.
  • Added Circuit Puzzle challenges requiring circuit sections to be rotated and connected correctly.
  • Added Memory Puzzle challenges based around revealing and matching concealed pairs.
  • Puzzle type selection is randomized so consecutive Puzzle Array activations do not always present the same style of challenge.
Puzzle Randomization
  • Puzzle content is generated dynamically rather than using a single fixed puzzle layout.
  • Randomized puzzle generation creates different configurations between Puzzle Array activations.
  • Cargo Block Fit puzzles generate new piece arrangements while preserving solvable board layouts.
  • The combination of randomized puzzle types and randomized internal layouts greatly increases the number of possible Puzzle Array sessions.
  • The system is designed so the Puzzle Array remains a recurring side activity rather than becoming a single puzzle that can simply be memorized.
Reshuffle System
  • Added a Reshuffle option allowing players to reject a newly generated puzzle and request another one.
  • Reshuffling is only available before the current puzzle has been interacted with.
  • The first meaningful interaction with a puzzle permanently locks reshuffling for that Puzzle Array session.
  • This prevents players from partially solving or inspecting a puzzle before repeatedly searching for a more favourable alternative.
  • The reshuffle state is clearly reflected in the Puzzle Array interface.
Puzzle Rewards
  • Completing a Puzzle Array challenge opens a reward selection instead of immediately granting a fixed reward.
  • Players can choose their preferred reward from the available options after successfully completing a puzzle.
  • Only one reward can be claimed from each completed Puzzle Array challenge.
  • The two-hour recharge cycle begins after successful puzzle completion.
  • Puzzle rewards are integrated with the existing Distant Shift game state and save system.
Puzzle Audio
  • Integrated Puzzle Array sound feedback with the existing Distant Shift audio system.
  • Added contextual sound feedback for interacting with puzzle pieces and controls.
  • Cargo Block Fit includes feedback for picking up, placing, rotating, removing and correctly positioning pieces.
  • Sliding puzzles include movement feedback for tile interactions.
  • Jigsaw puzzles include movement and correct-placement feedback.
  • Circuit puzzles include rotation and connection feedback.
  • Memory puzzles include card flip, successful match and failed match feedback.
  • Added invalid-action feedback for puzzle interactions that cannot be completed.
  • Added dedicated completion and reward feedback when a puzzle is successfully solved.
  • Puzzle sounds respect the existing game audio and volume settings.
Interface and Integration
  • Added a dedicated full-size Puzzle Mini-Games interface matching the existing Distant Shift visual design.
  • Added Puzzle Array status information, puzzle instructions, controls, reshuffle state and recharge information directly to the mini-game interface.
  • Integrated the Puzzle Array into the main game navigation without altering the existing profession, world, shop or progression systems.
  • Puzzle Array progression and availability are tied to the player's current expedition progress.
  • The feature operates as a separate side activity and does not interrupt normal Gathering, Combat, Prospecting or Fabrication progression.
  • The final production system contains no development test mode or forced unlock behaviour.
